Teaching Practice: A Challenging Time for Student Teachers
A
challenge is described as a “new or difficult task that test someone’s ability
and skill”.
The
challenge that the school that I did my practical at faced, was
discipline. Discipline is the core
challenge that this school and every other school faces these days. The children do not have any respect for the
elderly anymore, especially their teachers. They expect that the teachers must
give in to their demands. They do not do homework anymore, because they expect
that the teachers should just succumb to spoon-feeding. Teachers complain that
they struggle to finish the syllabus, because majority of the time they spend on
behavioral management and assessing individual learners instead of the class
as a whole.
Therefore,
discipline has become one of the biggest challenge in our schools and it just
gets worse by the day!

Miss and Mr New Orleans
The annual Miss New Orleans pageant was a
sight to behold. From the Spanish theme, the eclectic music, nervous
contestants in sequenced frocks and spiky heels, to various artists who kept
the noisy crowds on the edge of their seats, it was one hell of a night. The ladies looked mesmerizing in their ball
gowns, each walking with the confidence of a goddess. Cheers, screams and
whistling howls from friends and family among the crowd were deafening to say
the least. As they crowned the winner, the tension in the auditorium could be
cut with a knife. Reality struck, only one could win, lucky number 7. The
epitome of an angel sent down by the gods- she was dressed all in white, her
olive skin accentuated by her auburn hair and dazzling white smile. She most definitely deserved the crown.

High School Derby: New Orleans vs Klein Nederburg
INTERSCHOOL SEASON IN PAARL
To start us off I just
need to say: NOSS OF NIKS! Well, that phrase got a whole new meaning since New
Orleans Secondary School won Klein Nederburg Secondary School with an end
score: 18 to naught.
As soon as the Virgo
and Leo stars align, the Interschool season starts. Or as in a generalized
coloured statement would go: “Derby Season”. The event kicked off on the 26th
July 2019 with Miss and Mister New Orleans, a beauty pageant for learners
attending the school. The week following the crowning of Miss and Mister New
Orleans, the school organizing the year’s derby arranges a function for all the
sportsmen, sportswomen, first aid learners, and other participating staff and
learners to declare the derby open and declare the learners and staff temporary
enemies.
The main event was a
huge success. The day’s events start with the school’s dance groups
entertaining the crowds, then all the A-teams, except the u/18A team, plays. After
a round of singing the National Anthem, and both schools’ songs and a message
from both principals, the u/18A team starts playing.
The game between New
Orleans Secondary School and Klein Nederburg Secondary School is televised
yearly on SuperSport.
